DON’T CALL US WE’LL CALL YOU
“Follow the fortunes of actor and divorced daughter and their struggle for existence in their profession in ‘Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You!’ Written by playwright and actor, Harry MacDonald (with, as he puts it, ‘the kind assistance of Will Shakespeare and Tony Chekhov’) it is enacted by Harry and Eva Gray.
This is the same team that earned praise in this column for ‘All That Loving Stuff’ in which Eva Gray impressed us with her splendid portrayal of the Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe. In this latest offering she morphs into many different characters like a chameleon. As well as playing Jody Bradshaw, the main female character of the piece, she plays a receptionist, a casting director, an American actress, a theatre director, theatrical landladies and - never ceasing to surprise - performs a magnificent Indian dance as a Bollywood film producer.
Harry’s main role is as Maurice Rillington, an eternally optimistic aging actor. He also plays an impresario, Jody’s ex-husband, a strange Swede and an amorous Frenchman.
The script and the pair’s excellent comedy timing provide many belly laughs as the protagonists encounter the whims of agents, randy producers, pretentious directors and the like.”
